Kathleen G. Beavis, MD, joined the University of Chicago in 2013 as Assistant Professor in Pathology. She is the director of the University’s Clinical Microbiology and Immunology Laboratories and the interim director of the Clinical Laboratories. A diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, Beavis focuses on the clinically relevant, cost-effective diagnosis of infectious diseases. Her areas of expertise include the diagnosis of HIV, tuberculosis, and Clostridium difficile, and the application of high throughput molecular methods to the diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases. Beavis received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency and a fellowship in microbiology at the Cleveland Clinic and an internship in anatomic pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. She serves on several panels for the FDA and CDC, and has presented at more than four dozen conferences and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists in 2009.
